Mr A, who is married and has two children, avoided repossession after his local housing trust in Brighton helped him set aside both a warrant of possession and a possession order made by his mortgage company. In a court hearing, the housing trust rescued Mr A and he avoided repossession. The bank was ordered not to charge any of the legal costs to his mortgage account which provided him with more relief.



 
Gateshead couple gets help from the Citizens Advice Bureau

Mr and Mrs W found themselves facing repossession of their home when they failed to keep up mortgage payments after Mr W was made redundant in January 2009. With the help of the Citizens Advice Bureau they were able to claim benefits and to negotiate lower monthly instalments with their lender, meaning that they can now afford their mortgage payments and substantial payments on their arrears.



 
Mortgage Rescue Scheme a “life-saver” for Hull man

The Mortgage Rescue Scheme was ‘a life-saver’ for long-time Hull resident Philip Oglesby and his wife, Sharon, who suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2007 and needed full-time care from Phil. He heard about it on the radio and got in touch with the Citizens Advice Bureau who made an appointment for him with Hull City Council Housing Options team. Phil and his wife are now in the final stage of the process and will soon become tenants in their own home.



 
Peterborough homeowner helped by the National Debtline

After taking out loans to help an ex-partner, Mrs B from Peterborough found herself in financial difficulty and falling into £50,000 worth of debt. Increasing interest rates meant that the receptionist struggled to make the necessary payments. Further bad luck followed when her partner was made redundant. The couple then fell behind with their mortgage payments and eventually had to seek debt advice. She was put in touch with the National Debtline by her mortgage company. They helped her defer her mortgage payments until November this year to help get things back on track.



 
Portsmouth Community Legal Advice Centre

When Mr and Mrs R and their 15-year-old child were threatened with the loss of their home, they turned to the Portsmouth Community Legal Advice Centre, who offered them specialist advice which helped them keep their property. When they went to court the Judge granted outright possession to the mortgage company, but it was suspended based on agreed terms to enable the clients to keep their home.



 
Rochdale widower's home saved by the Mortgage Rescue Scheme

Mr B, a 58-year-old widower with one child from Rochdale, was threatened with eviction by his lender due to arrears of only £2,000. With the help and advice of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough’s housing team he was approved for the Mortgage Rescue Scheme resulting in lower mortgage payments, which means he can now stay in his home of 14 years.



 
Scarborough resident helped by Mortgage Rescue Scheme

A long-term medical condition and problems finding work left Alistair Michael unable to meet payments on his mortgage and another loan secured against his home. He contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau and was put on the Mortgage Rescue Scheme. Scarborough Council negotiated with the loan company and the remaining debt was turned into an unsecured loan. Alistair and his family are now able to stay in their home as tenants.



 
Tavistock couple helped by Consumer Credit Counselling Service and Shelter

When Richard lost his business as a result of the recession, it was clear that he would find it difficult to continue paying the mortgage on his family home near Tavistock. He called the Consumer Credit Counselling Service and they pointed me in the direction of Shelter, the housing charity. With the help of a case worker at Shelter, the family were able to obtain financial assistance from West Devon Borough Council until the Department of Work and Pensions took over their mortgage interest payments.



 
Worthing couple keep their home thanks to the Mortgage Rescue Scheme

Lee and Laura Joy avoided repossession and were able to remain in their home as tenants by making use of the ‘Mortgage to Rent’ option under the government’s Mortgage Rescue Scheme, thanks to advice given to them by Worthing Borough Council.

Melton family, Kelly and Jamie Carr and their five children, were so convinced that they would be made homeless they had packed their bags and even moved some of their furniture to friends’ homes. Now, six months later they are still in their home thanks to going to the local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Mr and Mrs Brown had been living for some years in their Droitwich property with their 18-year-old daughter. The threat of repossession action from their mortgage company loomed following Trevor Brown’s redundancy. The local Citizens Advice Bureau told them about the Mortgage Rescue Scheme and referred the couple to Wychavon District Council, to help them through the process.

Redundancy meant a sudden drop in income for Mairead Hassett and her husband. As they struggled to pay the mortgage and debts mounted, creditors threatened court action and eviction. Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council’s housing team helped them secure their home with the Mortgage Rescue Scheme, and Citizens Advice Bureau helped them with their debts.
